A Pennsylvania couple tragically lost their lives while vacationing in Florida with their six children after being caught in a dangerous rip current. Brian Warter, 51, and Erica Wishart, 48, were swimming with two of their teenage children on Hutchinson Island on June 20 when the situation took a deadly turn.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office released details of the tragic incident, explaining that the teenagers made heroic efforts to save their parents but were ultimately unable to overcome the strong current. Emergency services responded quickly, and both Brian and Erica were rushed to a nearby hospital. Sadly, despite the rescue efforts, the couple was pronounced dead by hospital staff.

The day of the tragedy, the water conditions were reported to be especially treacherous. According to Phillyburbs.com, red flags were flying at the beach to warn swimmers of the hazardous rip currents. Martin County Fire Rescue representative Cory Pippen confirmed that the flags were in place to alert beachgoers of the dangerous conditions.

Brian’s father, Larry Warter, shared with CBS 12 News that Brian and Erica had been in a relationship for over a year and were engaged to be married. Erica was a mother of four children, while Brian had two. The couple had decided to wait until their children finished college before getting married. Their trip to Stuart, Florida, was a major event for the family, marking their first vacation together as a blended family.

Larry Warter fondly recalled the excitement Brian and Erica felt about the trip. “They were so thrilled, they couldn’t see straight about going down,” he said. “This was the first time. This was the experiment. They had all six of their kids together. They had been planning it for over a month.”

The National Weather Service provides critical advice regarding rip currents on its website. It emphasizes that while rip currents do not pull swimmers underwater, they can quickly tire swimmers, making escape difficult. The key to survival is to remain calm.

“Trying to swim against a rip current will only use up your energy; energy you need to survive and escape the rip current. Do NOT try to swim directly into the shore. Swim along the shoreline until you escape the current’s pull. When free from the pull of the current, swim at an angle away from the current toward shore,” the service advises. It also recommends never swimming alone and following the rule, “If in doubt, don’t go out.”

A vet has issued a stark warning about kissing your dog on the lips after a woman had to have her legs and arms amputated.

Many dog owners see no harm in letting their pets lick them, but experts are now urging caution after a woman had to undergo quadruple amputation.

Marie Trainer, from Stark County, Ohio, had returned from a vacation in 2019 with a minor cut on her hand.

Upon arriving home, her dog greeted her with affectionate licks. She thought nothing of it – until she fell seriously ill days later.

Marie recounted to FOX News: “Four days later, I wasn’t feeling well and just got sicker and sicker.”

Initially thinking it was the flu, her husband, Matt, rushed her to the hospital.

Doctors were baffled at first, but her condition rapidly deteriorated, and she slipped into a coma.

Tests revealed that Marie had contracted Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a bacteria found in the saliva of dogs and cats.

When it enters the human body, particularly through cuts or wounds, it can provoke a dangerous immune response.

In severe cases, this can lead to blood clots, cutting off circulation to the limbs and necessitating amputation.

Tragically, Marie lost both her arms and legs.

Experts have highlighted that dogs can unknowingly spread zoonotic diseases, which are illnesses transmitted from animals to humans.

A research team at Penn State specifically warned about antibiotic-resistant salmonella. Sophia Kenney, a lead author of the study, explained:

“Especially with salmonella, we think about the role of agriculture and transmission—we think about eggs, we think about beef.

“But the thing is, we don’t let cows sleep in our beds or lick our faces, but we do dogs. We have this close bond with companion animals in general, and we have a really close interface with dogs.”

“Dogs are known for their indiscriminate habits when it comes to sniffing, licking, and eating. Their mouths can harbor bacteria such as E. coli, campylobacter, and salmonella, which are zoonotic and easily transmitted between species.

“While most healthy adults are unlikely to suffer severe effects, exposure to these microorganisms can lead to gastrointestinal issues and oral infections.

“Parasites like giardia, roundworms, and hookworms can also be spread through licks, causing abdominal pain and digestive problems in both dogs and humans.”

Since her life-altering experience, Marie has been on a long road to recovery. She has undergone extensive rehabilitation to adapt to prosthetic limbs.

Reflecting on her progress, she said: “It’s been challenging. Learning how to walk was the hardest thing, but I’m good, I’m doing good.”

When Hannah Glass decided to eat a homemade brownie, she hadn’t known that days later, her parents would be picking up her cremated remains. The college student had always been cautious about her peanut allergy but there was something hidden in the sweet treat that killed her after only two bites.

A community in Wisconsin is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Hannah Glass, a bright and compassionate freshman at Maranatha Baptist University who tragically lost her life due to an unexpected allergic reaction to a brownie.

On November 5, the young woman, who turned 19 two days before, had a violent reaction to a brownie she received from a friend. The teenager had a known allergy to peanuts, and was usually careful, but she was unaware the sweet treat reportedly contained roasted peanut flour, an ingredient used as a gluten-free alternative.

“The second bite, she knew something was wrong,” Hannah’s father, David Glass, told WISN. The dad then explained her friend brought his daughter the brownie from a women’s group on campus and while the treat was made with peanut flour to accommodate gluten-free students, it didn’t consider those with severe peanut allergies.

“We believe because this product contained roasted peanut flour, separate from oily peanut butter, that masked this,” continued David, who along with Hannah’s mother, Janean, raced about 45 minutes from their home in Milton, Wisconsin, to the school residence in Watertown.

‘Right lung collapsed’

Hannah’s reaction was aggressive and immediate. Her father shares that she had thrown up, welled up with hives, and managed to find some relief with Benadryl.

But when she crawled up to her top bunk to rest, her condition changed dramatically.

“When Hannah rolled on her side, the anaphylaxis reaction that we had not seen before hit incredibly hard. This caused her to gasp for breath, leading to the collapsing of the lung, further exacerbating the situation,” the grieving dad writes in the Facebook post that he shared November 11.

That was when Hannah climbed down the ladder from her bed and lost consciousness “part way down” – before her EpiPen was administered.

“I picked Hannah up…and carried her outside to wait for the ambulance to arrive,” the father penned. “She was completely unresponsive, and I was incredibly helpless.”

Paramedics arrived and worked tirelessly to revive her, but Hannah’s heart had stopped for four minutes. She was immediately rushed to Watertown Hospital, before being transferred to Froedtert Hospital, where she was placed on a ventilator.

Brain ‘terminally damaged’

Her family watched helplessly as doctors fought to save her life, but the damage was severe.

“The majority of her brain was unmistakably, seriously, critically, and without the life-sustaining measures in place, TERMINALLY damaged,” David writes om Facebook of the brain damage sustained after having several seizures, which led to “severe brain swelling.”

“There were no conversations of quality of life or anything like that. This was only life and death!”

Despite the tireless efforts of medical professionals, Hannah’s brain suffered critical damage that left her without hope of recovery.

‘Endless walk’

Before Hannah’s final goodbye on November 10, 2024, she was honored with a traditional “Honor Walk,” a touching tribute as she was taken to the operating room for organ donation.

About 300 people lined the walls of the hallway for the walk, her family by her side until their “final goodbye.”

“It seemed like an endless walk, yet it was also going too quickly,” David shared.

‘Good to have her home’

“We went and picked up Hannah’s cremated remains. It was and is a strange mix of emotions. There is still a strong sense of disbelief,” David writes in a November 22, 2024 Facebook post. “Having now, this physical, tangible, memorial of her physical life and body is nice, in one sense, because we now have something to see and to ‘hold on to,’ but it is also very sad because this is certainly not the same relationship that we had before. But, then again, it is good to have her home.”

Now her parents are reminding people with food allergies to “Always be aware. Make sure your EpiPens are up to date,” David said.

Hannah’s organs have already saved four people who desperately needed lifesaving transplants.
